It's not a school to learn spells, it's just abstract theory about how some magic is bad. This is not a happy book about the wonders of magic. It's a depressing tale about manipulating adults, evil children, and multiple dimensions. Even with all of that, the first part of the novel is interesting, but when the children get truly evil and the doubles start appearing in mirrors, I lost interest. The end of the novel resembled the movie The One, and it was a bit strange.
As a YA book this is certainly depressing. If you are looking to explore a fun school of magic, then this is not for you.

I cleaned out a great number of my books this year and I wanted to give this one a re-read a high honor for me! I remember really loving this, so I gave it another try. I was a little more disappointed than I thought I would be.
I can see why this book set my younger heart aflame, but it lacks a lot of the richness that I remembered about it. Young adult books usually have a lot of character and warmth if well-written I held on to this book because I had enjoyed it so much about ten years ago.
Young adult books usually have a lot of character and warmth if well-written but this one just fell a little flat. The characters were a bit silly and one-sided, and although the setting of the book lends to high magical ability, it was all rather unbelievable that the main character, with very little training, was entering alternate dimensions, given the constraints of the universe within the book.
It's allllll good though, I'm glad I gave this book another try just for the hell of it. I've given it to someone else who will hopefully enjoy it more than I did! Read this book ages ago and for life of me, could not remember the title until I stumbled upon it in the library a few days ago. Tris is a witch who enrolls in a school for sorcery like the title states and quickly begins learning about her own abilities, despite boring ethics classes and a catty roommate.
However, two power-hungry students soon manage to summon demons from another world who steals Tris's beloved. They mock her and then propsse a challenge to her to get him back with her own p Read this book ages ago and for life of me, could not remember the title until I stumbled upon it in the library a few days ago. They mock her and then propsse a challenge to her to get him back with her own power. The headmistress tells her to undergo the challenge to bring them back.
This is one point that bothers me. It does not make sense that the staff could not stop these idiotic power-hungry students. I call this a plot hole deliberately created to give Tris and her friends an plot point. The middle drags, but I can suffer through it because I love the ending. Seriously, one of the best endings I've seen in a book. Three stars because I loved this book when I was little and it has a really memorable ending. Feb 10, Yuutje thelittlebookworm rated it it was amazing.
I think I liked this even more the second time around. I remembered many things from it and rereading this felt like taking a trip down the memory lane. I'd read this book in Dutch in primary school, and it sort of stayed with me all this time. I really wanted to reread it. I'm so glad I got my hands on an english copy!!
It's not a perfect, by all means, but it is not a story you easily forget. I liked many elements from it. I love the descriptions of Tria using her powers;it is really easy to picture the magic in my mind.
I also love how in this book it is not so much using wands and spells no offense I am a massive potterhead but more about using the power within you don't know how to explain this. This time around I think I also noticed some allegorical elements, which I liked.
Mar 04, Cindy rated it it was ok Shelves: , ya , fantasy-children. Tria has special magical powers that she's never had a chance to develop. So when she gets a chance to attend a school for people like her, she hopes this will be her big chance.
Unfortunately, the school is nothing like she expected. She seems to be in trouble all the time. Making friends isn't as easy as she had hoped either, and the lessons are all theory, no practice.
It soon develops that there are opposing forces at work in the school, and Tria finds herself the only one who can save her fr Tria has special magical powers that she's never had a chance to develop.
It soon develops that there are opposing forces at work in the school, and Tria finds herself the only one who can save her friends. She'd better figure out how to use her powers or they're all in trouble. I had high hopes for this book, but it turned out to be confusing and disappointing. I liked Tria, but wow, she is so dumb sometimes. Her intentions are good, but she never learns from her mistakes.
The last part of the book was totally confusing, and it would have been so easy to make that easier to read. Not really recommended, although I might give the writer another chance later. Jul 09, Julie rated it it was ok Shelves: fantasy , young-adult , school. I was enjoying it at first. The world was a little ill-defined, but I'm a sucker for school stories. However, then it got sort of woo-woo and murky and muddled.
She's supposed to learn how to use magic, not from her classes, not from her teachers, not even from the guidance of her teachers, or even from books. She's just sort of.. A few chapters in, I had pulled the next book from the library shelf and checked it out, assuming I'd want to read it I was enjoying it at first.
A few chapters in, I had pulled the next book from the library shelf and checked it out, assuming I'd want to read it. Near the end, I definitely didn't want to read the next one. At the end, well, if it's about an entirely different character and situation, maybe? Not like I don't have other books to read. I have way way way more than that. Oh, and also to my two dogs, Juliet, a pit bull mix, and Pixie. Juliet I adopted from Animal Control after someone dumped her on the street. She's young, boisterous, and loves everybody. As for Pixie, I agreed to foster to save her from being euthanized. By the time she became adoptable, I realized I couldn't give her up. She's a very pretty dog, a mix of many breeds. She and Juliet love to play together and provide me with great entertainment. Four of my published books are for teens, and form the Arucadi series, for the country in which they are set.
I love hearing from teen readers. I also have a fantasy novel for older teens and adults, three Arucadi novels taking place long before the first four books. It's light on fantasy, and if you don't like series or trilogies, this might be the book for you. And finally I have a children's chapter book for ages titled Grandy's Grand Inventions, which has elements of both fantasy and science fiction.
